Abstract
The purpose of the this review paper is to present the biological basis for the use of agents containing the bioactive compounds of the Scutellaria baicalensis with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in the treatment of periodontal disease. This plant is a source of polyphenolic flavonoid compounds, among which the most famous are flavones in the form of baicalin, baicalein, wogonoside, wogonin and oroxylin A. Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant properties of these flavones that could be used in the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis were discussed. The results of interventional studies with Scutellaria baicalensis extracts in periodontal treatment are also presented.
