Patient: Good afternoon, Doctor. I have an appointment for today at 4:00 p.m.

Doctor: Good afternoon. Yes, as far as I remember you were scheduled for a consultation.

Patient: That’s right. My dentist referred me to you. Apparently, I should have some surgery on the gums done because of some granulation tissue.

Doctor: Yes, of course, but first I must examine you. Oh, it’s good  that you have with you your radiological documentation.

After the examination

Doctor: Well, I see. I agree with my colleague that the treatment with curettage should be performed in a few places.

Patient: Is it because of the granulation tissue?

Doctor: Of course, it’s a reason as well. Because of the relatively deep pockets I should perform open curettage, which consists of cutting the gums, which will allow me to see the tartar and dead tissue that must be removed. If the pockets were shallower I could perform closed curettage, that is a procedure without cutting into the gum.

Patient: So I assume it will be painful.

Doctor: In the course of treatment it will not hurt because of anesthesia, afterwards you will take the analgesic tablet and it should not be bad either.

Patient: Will I have the procedure today?

Doctor: Not today, because I need more time, and you must still do some additional tests.

Patient: So when can make an appointment?

Doctor: I suggest in a week.

Patient: Ok, I will show up. And will I be able to go to visit my family the next day? I’m having a niece’s wedding.

Doctor: Unfortunately it won’t be possible. It is a surgical procedure and each is different. You can have a small swelling, even the face. And sometimes minor bruises can appear, so you probably should not plan any social events. You can not drink alcohol for at least 2 days, and you mustn’t smoke. Besides, throughout the week following the procedure soft diet and chewing on the other side are recommended. And dancing is not allowed.

Patient: I see. I have to go to the wedding – I am my niece’s  godmother, so we have to postpone the surgery in two weeks. I do not plan more trips before the holidays. Also, it will be before May long weekend so I do not have to go to work.

Doctor: Indeed. A few days at home after the surgery will be helpful. Anyway, I always give my patients at least 1 day of sick leave or I do it just on Friday so they can rest over the weekend.

Patient: And will I be able to brush my teeth?

Doctor: Of course, but with a special brush, with soft bristles. And it would be recommended to apply some rinses. But I will tell you this all this after the surgery. Anyway, I always give my patients an accurate written information. So you will also get it.

Patient: Ok. So our next visit is scheduled on 30th April.

Doctor: Yes. I will see you on the 30th!

Patient: See you!
