Metronidazole in dentistry – review of the literature

Streszczenie

Celem pracy było usystematyzowanie wiadomości dotyczących stosowania  metronidazolu w  procesach zapalnych pochodzenia bakteryjnego w obrębie narządu żucia. Metronidazol należy do przedstawicieli nitroimidazoli i jest powszechnie stosowanym chemioterapeutykiem. Wykazuje aktywność przeciwko bakteriom beztlenowym i pierwotniakom. W stomatologii znalazł zastosowanie w leczeniu przeciwzapalnym pochodzenia bakteryjnego w periodontologii, chirurgii i endodoncji.

Summary

The aim of the study was to systematize information concerning the use of metronidazole  in inflammatory processes of bacterial origin within the masticatory system. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole’s representative and  is widely used chemotherapeutic agent . It shows activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. In dentistry has found application in the treatment of bacterial inflammations in periodontology, surgery and endodontics.
